Westbury Park Engineering stands firmly behind the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) in raising concerns about the unintended consequences of the proposed UK Steel Strategy.
As a UK steelwork fabricator operating within a complex and pressurised supply chain, we recognise the importance of strengthening domestic steelmaking. However, the current proposals risk creating challenges for the very businesses that convert steel into the critical infrastructure the UK depends on.
The BCSA’s letter highlights several issues that directly affect downstream manufacturers and fabricators:
- Tariffs applied at commodity‑code level risk capturing products that are not manufactured in the UK, increasing costs without offering a viable domestic alternative.
- Excluding fabricated products from tariff measures creates a loophole that could accelerate the offshoring of value‑added work — undermining UK capability, skills and jobs.
- Procurement expectations increasingly specify materials that UK producers cannot currently supply, widening the gap between policy intent and practical delivery.
For the UK to maintain a resilient, competitive and future‑ready steel sector, policy must reflect the realities of the entire supply chain — from primary production through to fabrication and installation. A strategy that strengthens one part of the sector while unintentionally weakening another will not deliver long‑term national benefit.
We support the BCSA’s call for constructive dialogue and evidence‑based refinement of the proposals. A balanced approach is essential to protect UK manufacturing, safeguard skilled jobs and ensure the continued delivery of high‑quality, UK‑fabricated steelwork.
Westbury Park Engineering remains committed to championing a strong, sustainable and fully integrated UK steel supply chain.
