WPE completed a fully bespoke external steel access system for a private client in Wimbledon, combining precision engineering with refined architectural detailing. This project required a tailored approach to integrate seamlessly with an existing stone structure while delivering safe, durable, and visually cohesive access across multiple levels.
Project Overview
The installation features a spiral staircase, a connecting platform, and a curved walkway, all designed to follow the unique geometry of the property. Built around a circular stone tower, every element was carefully fabricated to ensure a precise fit and smooth flow between spaces.
Key Features
🔁 Custom Spiral Staircase
A compact, radial steel staircase was installed within a confined curved enclosure, maximising usable space without compromising accessibility. Each step was individually fabricated to follow the tight geometry, supported by a continuous handrail and balustrade system for safety and strength.
🟫 Steel Platform / Bridge
A straight connecting platform links different sections of the property, constructed using a robust steel grid framework. The open-grid design ensures effective drainage and long-term durability for external use, while maintaining a clean, architectural appearance.
🔄 Curved Walkway
Wrapping elegantly around the stone tower, the curved walkway demonstrates the precision of bespoke metalwork. The structure follows the exact radius of the building, creating a seamless transition between levels while offering elevated views over the surrounding garden.
Handrails & Balustrades
The entire installation is unified by decorative steel handrails, combining functionality with subtle design details. Features include:
- Vertical balusters for compliance and safety
- Circular motifs for visual interest
- Smooth, continuous handrails following both straight and curved sections
