DML / Babcock – Nuclear Fuel Handling Tower

Westbury Park Engineering was commissioned to design and manufacture a bespoke nuclear fuel handling tower to support the refuelling operations of Trident submarines at HMNB Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth.

This highly sensitive and safety-critical project required advanced structural and seismic engineering, alongside the development of specialised dockside access platforms. Our team delivered a robust and meticulously engineered solution, fully compliant with the stringent safety, regulatory, and operational requirements associated with nuclear infrastructure.

The tower was designed to withstand seismic activity while ensuring secure and efficient access for fuel handling operations. Precision manufacturing processes were employed throughout, and the structure underwent a complete trial assembly at our facility to validate performance, fit, and safety prior to deployment.

Following successful testing, the tower was transported and installed on site, integrating seamlessly into the dockyard’s operational environment.

This project exemplifies Westbury Park Engineering’s capability to deliver complex, high-integrity engineering solutions—combining innovative design, technical excellence, and manufacturing precision to support the operational readiness of the Royal Navy’s nuclear fleet.
