Project Overview
This 21-metre span pedestrian footbridge in Frome was designed to deliver both functional efficiency and a strong visual identity within its urban setting. Named in honour of local Formula 1 driver Jenson Button, the bridge provides a distinctive crossing that reflects both engineering precision and architectural expression.
Design Concept
The bridge adopts a cable-stayed structural arrangement, with a single central mast acting as the primary load-bearing element and visual focal point. The mast tapers elegantly towards its peak, enhancing the dynamic silhouette while reducing perceived mass.
Radiating from the mast, galvanized steel tension rods support the deck, creating a clean and efficient structural system suited to the relatively modest 21m span. The arrangement offers both stability and a refined aesthetic, with a balanced and symmetrical cable layout.
Materials and Construction
Careful material selection was central to the design:
- Corten A weathering steel forms the primary structure, including the mast and plate elements. Its natural patina provides durability while allowing the bridge to blend with its surroundings over time.
- Galvanized steel tension rods and infill panels offer corrosion resistance and contrast with the warmer tones of the Corten steel.
- Twisted Corten steel balustrades introduce a sculptural quality, adding texture and character along the length of the deck.
Architectural Features
The bridge is defined by several key elements:
- A tapered central mast, creating a strong visual landmark
- Cable-stayed support system, combining efficiency with elegance
- Contrasting material palette, balancing industrial and natural tones
- Refined balustrade detailing, enhancing the pedestrian experience
Context and Setting
Situated within a built environment of traditional stone buildings and mature landscaping, the bridge integrates contemporary design into a historic townscape. Its restrained palette and slender form ensure it complements rather than dominates its surroundings, while still providing a clear point of interest.
Outcome
The completed structure demonstrates how a relatively small-span pedestrian crossing can be elevated through thoughtful design. By combining structural clarity with high-quality detailing, the Jenson Button Footbridge delivers both practical connectivity and a lasting visual contribution to the local area.
